Rice Stubble Roller
The Rice Stubble Roller is a 20-foot cleated roller for rice ground after harvest. We build it in Plum Coulee, Manitoba. The drum is 36" across with a 1/2" wall and carries cleats on 7" spiral spacing. Working weight is about 530 lbs per foot of width, and the tractor requirement is 10+ HP/FT.
What it does in the field
Rice leaves tall, tough stubble and a rough surface behind the combine. The cleats knock the stubble down, break it up and press it into the ground. Straw lying against soil rots; straw standing upright does not, which is why the alternative has always been burning it off. The same pass firms and levels the field for whatever goes on it next.
Drum and cleats
The drum is 36" with a 1/2" wall and turns on a 3" bearing and shaft. Cleats are 6" x 3" x 1/2" Grade 50, set 7" apart in a spiral pattern so they enter the ground in sequence instead of a full row at a time. All 530 lbs per foot goes through the cleats, not a flat drum face.
Frame, wheels and jack
Frame tubing is 8" x 4" x 3/8", the same size we run under our Landrollers. The inline unit rides on two ST235/85/R16 -14 Ply tires with 8-Bolt hubs. A 7,000 LB topwind jack carries the hitch when the machine sits in the yard.
Transport
The inline machine travels 7'-7" wide, so a 20-foot roller follows the tractor down a road or a turn row. Safety chain and an LED light package are standard.
Inline and 3-Plex
The roller is built as an inline unit and as a 3-Plex. The specification table on this page is the inline machine. Both are in the videos further down the page. Ask us or your dealer which one fits your acres.

Plan on 10+ HP/FT, which puts the 20-foot machine in the 200 HP class. It is drawbar work: the roller runs about 530 lbs per foot, so check the drawbar and hitch rating too, not the horsepower alone.
The drum carries cleats on 7" spiral spacing instead of a smooth face, so it breaks rice stubble apart rather than pressing everything flat. Frame tubing at 8" x 4" x 3/8" and the 3" bearing and shaft are the same sizes as on the Landrollers.
Burning the stubble, or a tillage pass run only to deal with the straw. The roller knocks the stubble down and works it into the ground in one trip, 20 feet at a time.
The specification table on this page is the inline unit, the one that transports at 7'-7". A 3-Plex version is also built. Both are shown in the videos below, so call us or your dealer with your acres and we will tell you which one to order.
Safety chain, an LED light package, 8-Bolt hubs with two ST235/85/R16 -14 Ply tires and a 7,000 LB topwind jack. The cleated 36" x 1/2" drum and the 8" x 4" x 3/8" frame are the same on every unit.
