5-Plex Landroller

The 5-Plex Landroller is Mandako's five-section land roller, and the widest machine we build short of the 7-Plex. We make it in Plum Coulee, Manitoba, in six widths from 62’ to 85’, for tractors from 310+ HP on the smallest up to 425+ HP on the largest. Drums are 42” with a 0.625” wall, and the machine carries 487 to 556 lb on every foot of width.

What it does in the field

Rolling presses rocks and root balls back down, flattens ruts and lumps, and crushes residue so it breaks down faster. The surface is left firm, which is what puts seed against soil instead of air pockets and keeps a rough field from drying out through every clod. The second half of the job comes at harvest: with the stones pressed in, the combine header runs lower without picking up rock. Pulses, cereals, hay, grass stands and silage ground all get rolled.

Frame and drums

Main frame is 8”x4”x3/8” tubing with reinforced corners. The five sections hang on ductile cast knuckles with 1-1/2” pins. Each drum is 42” with a 0.625” wall and turns on a 3” shaft in 3” heavy-duty bearings that need no greasing, and every drum takes water when you want more weight on the ground. Sections overlap 2” to 3”, so no strip is left standing between drums.

Hitch and steering

The hitch floats on hydraulics and the wings pivot behind it, so each of the five drums stays on the ground it is over instead of bridging a dip. Both rear wheels steer on hydraulics. On an 85’ machine that is the difference between turning the roller around a headland and dragging it around.

Hookup and transport

Four hydraulic ports, 5 GPM at 2800 PSI, and a Category 3 pintle hitch. Hydraulic handles are colour-coded, so hookup takes a minute. A hydraulic wing lock holds the wings for the road. All six sizes fold to 15’-6” wide and stand 5’-10” high; transport length runs from 54’-2” on the 62’ unit to 65’-6” on the 85’. Tires are 235/80/R16 10-Ply highway tires, and LED light kits are standard.

Options

A mechanical acre counter keeps track of coverage. A mud scraper kit keeps the drums clean when you roll wet clay. Green or black.

Advantages of the model

Five sections, up to 85 feet

Six widths from 62’ to 85’, split into five drum sections that pivot behind a floating hitch. You cover the acres in one pass, and each drum still sits on the dirt under it instead of bridging a dip.

Weight on every foot of width

Drums are 42” with a 0.625” wall on a 3” shaft, which puts 487 to 556 lb on each foot of width. That is what presses stones below header height and firms the seedbed in the same pass.

Steering on both rear wheels

Both rear wheels steer on hydraulics. An 85’ roller comes around the headland instead of being scrubbed sideways through the corner, which saves the drum edges and the time it takes to line up the next pass.

Folds to 15’-6” for the road

Hydraulic wing lock, LED light kits and 235/80/R16 10-Ply highway tires are standard, and all six widths fold to the same 15’-6”. The 85’ unit moves between fields no wider than the 62’.

What tractor do I need?

310+ HP for the 62’, 325+ for the 65’, 350+ for the 70’, 375+ for the 75’, 400+ for the 80’ and 425+ for the 85’. The tractor also needs four hydraulic ports at 5 GPM and 2800 PSI, and a Category 3 pintle hitch.

How wide is it on the road?

15’-6” on all six sizes, and 5’-10” high. Transport length runs from 54’-2” on the 62’ unit to 65’-6” on the 85’. The wing lock is hydraulic and LED lights are standard.

Will it miss ground on a rough field?

No. The hitch floats and the five sections pivot on cast knuckles, so each drum follows the dirt under it. Drums overlap 2” to 3”, which leaves no unrolled strip between sections.

What does rolling do for yield?

Farmers rolling pulse crops report 1-4 bushels per acre. The gain comes from seed sitting against firm soil rather than air pockets, and from a header that can run low in the fall because the stones are already pressed in.

Should I take the 5-Plex or the 3-Plex?

Tractor first, acres second. The 5-Plex starts at 310+ HP and 62’; if your tractor is under 300 hp, the 3-Plex covers 30’ to 50’ at 120+ to 200+ HP. Above 85’ the 7-Plex goes to 112’.
